Millions of worshippers experience unparalleled comfort within the Grand Mosque thanks to a marvel of modern engineering – its air conditioning system. This system delivers not just cool air but also ensures exceptional air quality.
Nine Levels of Purification, Every Day
The air within the mosque undergoes a rigorous nine-stage purification process daily. This includes sanitization using ultraviolet technology, and eliminating harmful microorganisms. This remarkable feat is achieved by the Technical, Operational, and Maintenance Agency, the dedicated team responsible for the smooth operation of the mosque’s entire electromechanical system.
Giant Coolers, Strategic Placement
Strategically placed throughout the mosque are specialized air conditioning units. These units, powered by one of the world’s largest cooling systems, deliver a constant flow of chilled air, keeping worshippers comfortable during their prayers.
Massive Cooling Power from Two Stations
The colossal cooling capacity of 155,000 tons comes from two colossal stations – Ajyad and Shamiya, the largest mosque cooling stations globally. Shamiya, located 900 meters away, generates a massive 120,000 tons, while Ajyad, situated closer at 500 meters, contributes an additional 35,000 tons.
From Chilled Water to Cool Air
These stations chill water to a temperature between 4 and 5 degrees Celsius. This chilled water then travels through a network of pipes to the Grand Mosque. There, it reaches sophisticated air handling units where heat exchange occurs. The resulting cool and purified air is then distributed throughout the mosque.
Continuous Upgradation for Peak Performance
The air handling units have recently undergone a comprehensive upgrade. This includes replacing heat exchangers and air filters, ensuring the system continues to deliver exceptional air purification.
Multi-Stage Purification: A Shield Against Impurities
The purification process is a multi-stage marvel. First, natural air is drawn from the mosque and meticulously filtered. These advanced filters act as a shield, preventing dust particles and even minute contaminants from entering the air conditioning system. Finally, the air is sanitized with ultraviolet rays, ensuring it reaches prayer areas completely free of harmful microorganisms and viruses.
Skilled Hands, Constant Monitoring
A team of highly skilled Saudi engineers and technicians constantly monitors the system. They ensure optimal temperature and humidity levels, maintaining seamless operation around the clock. They meticulously adjust airflow throughout the mosque based on the number of visitors in different areas, providing thermal comfort tailored to worshippers’ needs while optimizing energy efficiency.
This dedicated team also oversees maintenance, adhering to strict protocols and guidelines, all while prioritizing safety and security measures.
