Jeddah: Saudi Arabia has made a significant stride towards sustainable transportation by placing an order for eight Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ships. These innovative vessels will be deployed in the water network of NEOM, the ambitious sustainable city being developed in the country’s northwest.

This order marks a major milestone for Stockholm-based Candela, as it is the largest ever for the company. The P-12, launched last year, is set to make its debut in Stockholm’s public transport system this fall.

Revolutionizing Water Transport

The P-12 operates on computer-controlled underwater wings, or hydrofoils, allowing it to “fly” above the water. This revolutionary design results in 80% less energy consumption compared to traditional ships. With a speed of 25 knots and an impressive range of over two hours, the P-12 is currently the world’s fastest and longest-range electric passenger ship.

Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela emphasized the P-12’s potential to transform water transportation. He highlighted the ship’s ability to offer frequent departures, quicker journeys, and a significantly reduced environmental impact compared to conventional ferries.

Comfort and Sustainability

The P-12 prioritizes passenger comfort with a digital control system that maintains stability even in challenging water conditions. Additionally, the electric motors are exceptionally quiet and produce minimal disturbance to marine life.

The initial batch of eight P-12 vessels will be delivered in 2025 and early 2026, marking the beginning of a new era of sustainable and efficient water transportation in Saudi Arabia.
