The Ministry of Culture’s Jeddah Historic District Program has unveiled a groundbreaking project, Culture Square. This landmark destination is designed to revitalize Historic Jeddah by establishing specialized centers dedicated to various artistic and cultural disciplines. By offering immersive experiences, Culture Square aims to enhance the visitor journey and position the district as a global tourist hotspot, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.
A Blend of Past and Present
Nestled on the shores of Al-Arbaeen Lagoon, overlooking the historic heart of Jeddah, Culture Square houses the Performing Arts Center and the Digital Arts Museum “teamLab Borderless”. This unique blend of traditional and contemporary culture creates a captivating visitor experience.
The Performing Arts Center will host a diverse range of cultural events, including theatrical performances, international festivals, film screenings, and interactive sessions. The center also features restaurants and cafes, providing spaces for social interaction and cultural exchange.
The teamLab Borderless Museum, a recipient of the Makkah Excellence Award for Cultural Excellence, merges art, science, and technology to create immersive and interactive experiences.
Preserving Historic Heritage
At the heart of Culture Square lies the restored Bait Amir Al Bahar. With its distinctive architectural design and large arched windows, this historic house once served as a lighthouse. The meticulous restoration of this iconic landmark demonstrates the program’s commitment to preserving the region’s cultural and architectural heritage.
A Harmonious Architectural Vision
The architectural vision of Culture Square seamlessly blends the rich traditions of Historic Jeddah with contemporary design. The building’s sloping roof harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, reflecting the themes of integration and unity with the environment. The project prioritizes public health and environmental sustainability, incorporating advanced technologies such as air purification systems and water conservation measures.
A Cultural and Tourist Destination
With a total area of approximately 26,000 square meters, Culture Square offers a wide range of cultural experiences. The Center for Performing Arts and Cinema, serving as the headquarters of the Red Sea Film Festival, features state-of-the-art facilities. The teamLab Borderless museum showcases innovative artworks that blur the boundaries between art, technology, and nature.
