Saudi Arabia is marking three years of significant progress on the transformative Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), launched in 2021 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This ambitious program tackles environmental challenges and fosters a more sustainable future. Also, March 27th is designated as Saudi Green Initiative Day to Raise Awareness about Environmental Action and Promote Sustainability
Planting a Greener Future
SGI boasts hundreds of projects underway, all driven by the core goal of increasing the Kingdom’s vegetation cover. The National Center for Vegetation Development plays a key role, spearheading seven initiatives focused on combating climate change and promoting large-scale tree planting.
A crucial undertaking is the “10 Billion Tree Study,” which explores the feasibility of this massive afforestation effort. This initiative aims to improve air quality, restore ecosystems, and contribute to global climate goals.
Key Initiatives Drive Progress
SGI unfolds through various key initiatives. The National Greening Program provides a roadmap for planting a staggering 10 billion trees by 2100. This program is phased, with initial goals of planting 400 million trees by 2030 and 4.7 billion by 2060.
Other initiatives address specific aspects of environmental restoration. The Forest Management and Development Initiative tackles forest degradation, while Rangeland Preservation focuses on rehabilitating vast areas of land. Developing 50 National Parks aims to improve not just vegetation cover but also promote eco-tourism.
Collaboration is a cornerstone of SGI. Initiatives like “Seven Million Trees for Royal Reserves” and public and private sector engagement programs involve planting millions of trees through partnerships.
A Global Leader in Reforestation
SGI stands as one of the world’s largest reforestation efforts. It addresses critical environmental concerns like reduced rainfall and limited green spaces. By aiming to grow 10 billion trees, SGI contributes significantly to global goals, representing 1% of the global afforestation target and a substantial 20% of the Middle East Green Initiative’s target.
Saudi Arabia’s commitment to environmental progress through SGI is evident. The initiative’s ambitious goals and ongoing projects demonstrate a clear vision for a greener and more sustainable future for the Kingdom and the world.
