The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced a major shakeup for its year-end championship. The prestigious WTA Finals will be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the next three years, starting in 2024. This marks a significant move for both the WTA and the Kingdom, known for its recent investments in sports.
Previously held in Cancun, Mexico, the Finals will now crown the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the heart of Saudi Arabia’s capital city from November 2nd to 9th. This year, the event boasts a record-breaking prize pool of $15.25 million, with further increases planned for 2025 and 2026.
The move to Riyadh reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing focus on sports development. The Kingdom has ramped up investments in various sports like football, Formula One, and golf in recent years. Saudi officials believe the WTA Finals can be a catalyst for inspiring young women within the country and promoting the sport on a wider scale.
The WTA’s decision followed a thorough evaluation process, considering bids from numerous regions and involving player feedback. This shift aligns with the ATP Tour’s move of its Next Gen Finals to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 2023 to 2027.
